Positive influence for life

Room to grow.
Reasons to keep trying.

01

Confidence through practice

Learning a new movement takes patience. We encourage children to try, ask questions and take pride in their own progress.

02

Focus with a purpose

Following instructions, remembering a sequence and practising with a partner give attention and listening a practical purpose.

03

Respect in action

Courtesy and self-control are part of how we train. Students learn to care for their partners and use their skills responsibly.

04

Movement that feels rewarding

Kicking, stepping and balancing give children an active challenge, with skills to work on as they develop coordination.

05

A place to belong

Training alongside other students creates opportunities to encourage one another, share a challenge and build friendships.

06

A reason to persevere

Progress comes through steady effort. Each lesson is another opportunity to practise finishing something that once felt difficult.

Every step counts

That “I did it!” moment.

For a child, progress can be as simple as remembering a pattern, speaking up or trying a movement again. Those small moments matter. Our aim is to help students notice their effort and feel proud of the work they put in.

Our teaching is grounded in the five tenets of Taekwon-Do: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit.

What ages is this class for?

Our Kids & Youth class is designed for children ages 6–12. Students learn alongside others in a similar stage of development while still progressing at their own pace. Teenagers aged 13 and up train in the Teens & Adults program. If your child is close to the age boundary, Master Barker will help you choose the group that best matches their maturity, confidence and experience.

Does my child need experience or natural athletic ability?

No previous martial arts experience is needed, and your child does not have to be naturally athletic. Beginners learn the foundations step by step, including balance, coordination, listening and safe technique. Every student starts somewhere different. What matters most is being willing to try, practise and keep going when a skill takes time.

What if my child is shy or nervous?

Feeling nervous before a first class is completely normal. Let us know when you arrange the visit so Master Barker can make the introduction feel comfortable and explain what your child can expect. Children are never expected to know everything on day one. They can begin by watching, following along and getting to know the group at a manageable pace.

What should my child wear and bring?

For the first visit, comfortable clothing that allows easy movement and a water bottle are usually all that is needed. Avoid restrictive clothing or jewellery that could interfere with training. When you arrange the class, we will confirm the details and explain how uniforms and any future equipment work before you need to purchase anything.

Does learning martial arts encourage aggression?

No. Impact Martial Arts teaches that skill must be matched by courtesy, self-control and responsibility. Children learn how to work safely with a partner, listen to instructions and understand when walking away is the strongest choice. The goal is confident, respectful behaviour—not looking for a fight.

Can parents watch the first class?

Please ask when booking and we will explain the current viewing arrangements. We understand that parents want to see how their child is taught and how the class feels. You are welcome to ask questions about safety, expectations, progression and anything else that will help your family make a comfortable decision.

My child has additional learning or support needs. Can we talk first?

Yes. Master Barker has taught students with a wide range of learning styles and support needs. Contact us before the first visit to share what helps your child communicate, focus and feel secure. We will have an honest conversation about the class environment, practical supports and whether the program is a suitable fit for your child.

When and where are classes?

Kids & Youth classes run Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30–6:15 PM at 2041 Harvey Avenue, Suite 100, Kelowna, British Columbia. Please arrange the first visit before arriving so we can expect your family, answer any questions and make your child’s introduction as smooth as possible.

What does it cost, and how do we start?

Use the trial registration link to see the current starting option, or call Master Barker for the latest membership, uniform and equipment information. We want families to understand the schedule and costs before making a decision. The first step is simply to get in touch and arrange a visit.

Does my child have to compete?

No child needs to arrive with competition as a goal. Regular classes focus on learning Taekwon-Do, personal progress and the five tenets. If tournament opportunities are available, Master Barker can explain what participation involves so you and your child can decide together. Competition is one possible part of the journey, not the reason every student trains.
